	Meritorious and Courageous Service For a recent school project, my daughters needed a picture of a United States veteran from our family. I immediately thought of my French grandfather, Pierre Veran, who served in the U.S. Cavalry in World War I, and during World War II was part of the OSS and courageously hid his friends and their families from the Nazis. The US awarded him a medal for his WWII efforts. Shown here is the wording of the official letter from the President of the United States. My aunt has the original letter and the medal proudly displayed in her home. It is interesting to note how the letter hints at his work for the OSS, or Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of today's CIA. To begin with, every year Russ Ode works the hot summers away in his garden. Once the produce is ready, this kind and generous man brings in bushels of vegetables every week. He doesnÕt expect anything in return. The fruits of his labors are free to allÑdirectly from his big heart. And every year at Christmas he brings in delicious home cooking: huge quantities of food to celebrate the holidays. I know that everyone here sincerely appreciates RussÕs unfailing generosity. Even among the many people at Essex who give from the heart, Russ stands out. It is uplifting in this time of cynicism to know someone who makes others feel good and lightens up a little corner of their day. IÕve worked here for nine years and I have yet to hear a harsh word uttered about Russ. ItÕs wonderful to meet truly good people in the course of our lives and weÕve met one in Russ Ode.
