Essex Industries: Vital Components for Life Volume 55 Winter/Holiday 2003 Archives
Determination Leads to Success
If I had to select one quality - one personal characteristic that I regard as being the most highly connected with success, whatever the field - I would pick the trait of determination. The will to stick to it and do it well. To get knocked down fifty times and get up off the floor saying: "Here comes number fifty-one!"

In this issue, Mickey Waldeman, Sr. Vice-President of Essex Industries shares his perspective on the core reason for Essex's success... our employees.

And that describes our Essex family of employees to a "T." Or, should I say, to an "E"? Their will, their determination over our nearly 57 proud years in business, is Essex's success. And it's simply amazing to me to think of not only the genius of our employees, but of their sweat, loyalty and diligence. All of which adds up to true determination.

And as I pondered this, I wondered further just how long some of us have been around Essex creating and producing these pretty incredible products of ours. Needless to say, being a V.P. makes me very prone to numbers. So, with data in hand I began computing some statistics. And what kind of Essex employee would I be if I didn't clearly acknowledge all of the caveats and disclaimers and what not that went into my computations, so here we go: The Respiratory Group's data skews the total employment numbers because even though it employs the most people, it is the youngest of the companies. So, a majority of their employees have been with the company for less than five years.

That being said, just look at these incredible stats...
>> Of our 446 Essex employees corporate-wide, exactly 195 of us have worked at Essex for over 5 years... that's almost 44%!
Let's break it down further...
>> Essex Headquarters (including Fluid Controls): 22 of 35 employees have served Essex for over 5 years... that's over 62%!
>> Manufacturing: 75 of 110 employees have served Essex for over 5 years... that's over 68%!
>> Cryogenics: 41 of 100 employees have served Essex for over 5 years... that's 41%!
>> Portable Breathing and Rescue Products: 26 of 67 employees have served Essex for over 5 years... that's over 38%!
>> The Respiratory Group (TRG) (which includes US Respiratory, Pacific Cylinders, EMS+ and Penox Technologies): 27 of 128 employees have served Essex for over 5 years... that's over 21%!
And where would we be without the top three longest employed individuals at each Essex' company...

Inspiring. So, what's the secret? All of our employees are talented enough to be anywhere, so how did Essex get so lucky? My first thought is that we're successful as a team and we know it! Despite our diverse personalities, we continue to come together, work hard and share the dream... that creative spark that results in next-generation products for untold numbers of pilots, passengers and patients across multiple industries who entrust their lives to our hands everyday.

I'm fortunate to work side-by-side with the people of Essex. Each of us has pooled and channeled our talents and energies into the growth of this company. And as Essex grows, we can all take pride in this renowned success.

Because we live in a time of transition, an uneasy era, we may be tempted to abandon some of the time-honored principles and commitments that have proven so successful during the history of this company. But, I'm not worried about that. I've seen the grit and backbone of the people of Essex. We'll never surrender our commitment to success, quality, and product integrity... and to each other. These are not luxuries, but necessities. We've made a business of it. And a damn good one at that.

There's an old saying that I feel is very fitting on the subject of determination: "...the light of our aspirations may dwindle from time to time, but is brought to flame by another person." And so it is to you, our employees, customers, suppliers, associates and friends, that we owe our deepest thanks for rekindling this light. We are all very fortunate to know and work with one another.

From everyone at Essex, we wish you all the very best that life offers as you enjoy valued time with your family and friends this holiday season.
